With rising costs, growing limited availability and well documented impact on the environment, farmers want to reduce the use of nitrogen fertiliser. We look at practices that can reduce reliance on external inputs and have the potential to maintain or improve productivity and delivery of ecosystem services i.e. intercropping, growing break crops, cover crops and herbal leys, using reduced tillage, and applying manure efficiently.
